How does the Endocannabinoid System Work?

The endocannabidoid system visualised

I have been recently taking CBD oil and have experienced much deeper sleeping. I wondered how this worked and so did a little investigation. It turns out that only recently (in our terms today) the Endocannabinoid System has been discovered. This, even though cannabis has been used for medical purposes for 3000 years… In 1964 Dr Raphael Mechoulam, an organic chemist, succeeded in synthesizing THC. His team went on to further research and describe other cannabinoids. In the early 1990’s the Endocannabinoid System was discovered. Its a group of endogenois cannabinoid receptors located in the human brain and central and peripheral nervous system. It is involved in keeping our bodies in balance and is associated with a number of processes including mood, appetitie, pain, memory and immune system.

Research into the Endocannabinoid System

Two receptors CB1 and CB2 have been found to be mainly in the brain and nervous system. Its all pretty complicated and new stuff so there is still much work to be done. One of the prominant researchers in this area is Dr Vincenzo Di Marzo who has devoted most of his scientific life tot he study of the Endocannabinoid System.

This film may help you to see how wide ranging this system is and its importance to our everyday life. It may help to get you started with your own research and interest….in the meantime I am very happy with my own results and new found sleep!
